ASTRONOMY IN ANCIENT AFRICA
OVERVIEW
In this article, we will discuss the use of astronomy throughout the continent of Africa and examine how it was utilized by many ancient kingdoms and cultures. The study of astronomy in Africa dates back thousands of years, with evidence of early astronomical observations dating as far back as 4800 BC. Across the continent, various African civilizations developed their own methods of observing and interpreting the stars, the Sun, the Moon, and other celestial bodies. These observations played an important role in everyday life, helping communities develop calendars, determine seasonal changes, plan agricultural activities, and establish the timing of religious ceremonies and cultural traditions. Astronomy also contributed to navigation, timekeeping, and the development of mathematical knowledge. Although different African kingdoms practiced astronomy at different times and in unique ways, many shared an interest in understanding the relationship between the movements of celestial objects and life on Earth.
