MANSA ABUBAKARI II
OVERVIEW
In this article, we will explore Mansa Abubakari II, a figure of intrigue in the history of the Mali Empire. He is often described as the ninth ruler of Mali and is associated with a legendary maritime expedition across the Atlantic Ocean during the early 14th century. According to a historical account recorded by the Arab historian Al-Umari, a predecessor of Mansa Musa is said to have sent an expedition westward across the Atlantic in an attempt to discover what lay beyond the ocean. The ruler reportedly entrusted the government of the empire to Mansa Musa before departing with a large fleet of vessels. Although the story has inspired considerable interest, the ruler’s identification as Abubakari II remains disputed, and there is no conclusive evidence that the expedition reached the Americas.
The story of Mansa Abubakari II raises fascinating questions about the maritime ambitions, geographical knowledge and exploratory traditions of medieval West Africa.
