QUEEN MERITATEN

OVERVIEW

Queen Meritaten.jpg

Queen Meritaten was an ancient Egyptian princess who lived during the 18th Dynasty, around the 14th century BC. She was the eldest daughter of Pharaoh Akhenaten and Queen Nefertiti, two famous figures in Egyptian history. Her name means “Beloved of Aten,” reflecting her family’s devotion to Aten, the sun disk worshipped as the supreme deity during Akhenaten’s religious revolution.

Meritaten played an important role in the royal court and frequently appeared in artistic representations alongside her parents. She participated in royal ceremonies and became increasingly prominent during her father’s reign. Some historical evidence suggests that she may have held significant political influence, although the exact extent of her authority remains uncertain. Meritaten was also associated with the royal household during a period of major religious and political change. Akhenaten established a new capital at Akhetaten, modern-day Amarna, and promoted the worship of Aten over traditional Egyptian gods.
