THE GEOLOGY OF AFRICA

OVERVIEW

In this article, we will explore the geology of the African continent to better understand the natural environment in which its ancient kingdoms, tribes, and empires developed. Africa's diverse geological formations, landscapes, and climate systems played a significant role in shaping the societies that emerged across the continent, influencing settlement patterns, trade networks, agricultural practices, and access to valuable natural resources. From the vast deserts of the Sahara to the fertile river valleys of the Nile, Niger, and Congo, Africa's varied environments provided both opportunities and challenges for the people who inhabited them.

Africa is one of the world's most resource-rich continents, possessing vast reserves of many of the planet's key minerals, metals, and other geological commodities, alongside an extraordinary diversity of plant life, wildlife, freshwater systems, and fertile lands.
