THE SERER RELIGION
OVERVIEW
In this article, we will explore the Serer Religion, an indigenous African spiritual tradition practised by the Serer people of Senegal and the wider Senegambia region of West Africa. Also known as A ƭat Roog, commonly translated as “the way of Roog” or “the way of the Divine,” the Serer religion encompasses a rich body of spiritual beliefs, religious practices, moral teachings and cultural traditions passed down through generations. At the centre of this belief system is Roog, the supreme divine being and creator, who represents a fundamental source of spiritual authority within Serer religious thought. The tradition also places considerable importance on the natural world, ancestral relationships, sacred places and the responsibilities individuals have towards their families and communities. The Serer religion developed within the historical and cultural environment of Senegambia, where Serer communities maintained distinctive spiritual traditions alongside the religious influences that spread throughout West Africa.
